ASSISTANCE FOR THE OLDER GENERATION
A little known organisation, The Cinnamon Trust provides help and assistance to older people who can no longer manage their pet without help. Their work is a free nationwide service and can mean the difference between rehoming a pet or keeping that vital companion with their owner. My concern is that very few people seem to know of their existence.
In their own words…..
“The only specialist national charity for people in their last years and their much loved, much needed companion animals.
A network of 15,000 volunteers “hold hands” with owners to provide vital loving care for their pets. We keep them together - for example, we’ll walk a dog every day for a housebound owner, we’ll foster pets when owners need hospital care, we’ll fetch the cat food, or even clean out the bird cage, etc.
When staying at home is no longer an option, our Pet Friendly Care Home Register lists care homes and retirement housing happy to accept residents with pets, and providing previous arrangements have been made with us we will take on life time care of a bereaved pet.
The Cinnamon Trust - Peace of mind for owners, love, care and safety for beloved pets”
When I receive a request to walk or care for dogs from those who could benefit from The Cinnamon Trust’s help, my aim is to put them in touch with the organisation. They have an excellent website for additional information and can also be contacted by telephone. Please see the bottom of this page for the website link and telephone number.
Of course, as a charity run by volunteers, they cannot always accommodate requests, but do everything possible to assist. If volunteers do not cover your area, they will advertise to find help in an attempt to provide assistance. If you are reading this article as an interested volunteer, then please contact them direct on the number below.
I have a number of clients who have benefitted greatly from the Trust. Two dogs in particular needed to find loving, permanent foster homes when their owners recently moved in to nursing homes. The dogs were found wonderful foster homes and are cherished every day. Contact is maintained between the owner and foster carer, with regular updates and photographs. Other clients currently have the Trust walk their dogs at weekends, and I walk the dogs during the week.
I cannot recommend the charity highly enough. The foster help that they provide for times of care or hospitalisation gives peace of mind to owners and great pleasure and satisfaction to the foster carers. A perfect combination, with the dog's welfare of paramount importance.
